Description

Painted Mountain Corn is a stunning open-pollinated flour corn developed to thrive in challenging climates. Producing ears in a dazzling array of reds, oranges, golds, blues, purples, and maroons, this exceptionally hardy variety was bred in the mountains of Montana for outstanding cold tolerance, drought resistance, and dependable yields.

Ideal for grinding into flavorful cornmeal, flour, and grits, Painted Mountain can also be harvested young for roasting or left to mature for colorful autumn decorations. Its vigorous plants mature earlier than many ornamental and flour corns, making it an excellent choice for northern gardens and areas with short growing seasons.

  • Type: Open-pollinated annual
  • Direct sow: After danger of frost has passed and soil reaches at least 60°F
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Spacing: 8–12 inches
  • Height: 5–7 feet
  • Ear size: 7–8 inches
  • Days to harvest: 85–95 days

Corn grows best in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Sow seeds in blocks of at least four short rows rather than a single long row to promote good pollination. Harvest ears at the milk stage for fresh eating, or allow them to dry completely on the stalk for milling, ornamental use, or saving seed.
