Substitutions

For much of the year, we are selling seed that is still in the ground. You can pre-order based on our conservative harvest estimates. If the actual harvest is less than our estimates, we can usually find a similar strain to substitute within the same varietal group, so please check YES to “May We Substitute?. If you select NO we will send a refund for any sold-out strains. An expert always considers your location, similar traits in strain, and any other strains already on your order to avoid duplicates. You are also welcome to add any notes if you have specific requests for possible substitutions, or you can request that we contact you if substitutions are necessary.

Description

Iowa German White Garlic is a porcelain-type hardneck variety with a unique origin story. The original seed stock arrived at Filaree Farm in a 43-bulb braid exchanged with a box of Iowa sweet corn from Des Moines-area grower Jordan Clasen of Grade A Gardens. This beautiful and productive strain has since proven itself as a vigorous grower, producing large bulbs with pure white bulb wrappers.

Iowa German White appears to be the same variety as the well-known German White (also called German Stiffneck or German Extra Hardy), a popular standard among Northeast growers. This Iowa-grown strain is notable for its larger, often more numerous cloves compared to our standard German White Stiffneck, with many bulbs producing 7 large, fat cloves. Its combination of strong growth, attractive bulbs, and classic Porcelain flavor makes it a standout choice for garlic growers.
