For much of the year, we are selling seed that is still in the ground. You can pre-order based on our conservative harvest estimates. If the actual harvest is less than our estimates, we can usually find a similar strain to substitute within the same varietal group, so please check YES to “May We Substitute?”. If you select NO we will send a refund for any sold-out strains. An expert always considers your location, similar traits in strain, and any other strains already on your order to avoid duplicates. You are also welcome to add any notes if you have specific requests for possible substitutions, or you can request that we contact you if substitutions are necessary.
Huckleberry Gold is a mid-season specialty potato developed through traditional breeding, producing small, round to oval tubers with striking purple skin and rich yellow flesh. It is prized for its creamy texture, buttery flavor, and excellent culinary versatility, performing well for boiling, roasting, baking, and mashing.
What sets Huckleberry Gold apart is its scientifically verified low glycemic index of 53, tested and certified by the Glycemic Index Foundation. In comparison, many common potato types fall significantly higher on the glycemic scale: russets average around 111, reds around 89, and whites around 82 (with the average potato range typically between 70–90). This lower glycemic response means Huckleberry Gold digests more slowly and produces a steadier blood sugar response.
Per 100g (boiled, skin-on), Huckleberry Gold provides approximately 87 calories, 20g carbohydrates, 2g fiber, 2g protein, and minimal fat (<0.1g), along with naturally occurring vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin B6. This nutritional profile, combined with its lower glycemic impact, has made it increasingly popular among health-conscious consumers and individuals managing blood sugar levels.
Customer feedback and field experience continue to reinforce its value as a functional food. Many diabetics and pre-diabetics report that Huckleberry Gold allows them to enjoy potatoes without the sharp glucose spikes commonly associated with other varieties. It has become especially popular among those seeking both flavor and dietary balance.
Beyond its nutritional profile, Huckleberry Gold is valued for its dependable yields, attractive appearance, and strong disease resistance, including resistance to common scab and verticillium wilt. Its combination of taste, performance, and nutritional advantages has made it one of the most distinctive and in-demand specialty potatoes available today.
