Description

Millennium is a highly productive asparagus variety developed by Professor David Wolyn at the University of Guelph in Canada. Introduced for its exceptional spear quality, reliability, and cold hardiness, Millennium quickly gained recognition and was named “Seed of the Year” at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto in 2005. It has since become one of the most widely recommended modern asparagus varieties for both home gardeners and market growers.

This variety is especially valued for its high yields, excellent flavor, and tender texture. Millennium produces uniform green spears with tight tips and strong vigor, often outperforming older standard varieties such as Jersey Knight. It is particularly well adapted to heavier soils but performs reliably across a wide range of growing conditions and climates.

Millennium asparagus is known for producing abundant harvests of tender, high-quality spears with rich asparagus flavor and minimal fiber. The plants are vigorous, winter hardy, and long-lived, making them an excellent long-term perennial crop for productive garden beds.

Growing Instructions: Plant asparagus crowns in early spring in a permanent garden bed with full sun and well-drained soil. Dig trenches 6–8 inches deep and space crowns approximately 12–18 inches apart. Spread the roots over a small mound of soil in the trench and cover with 2–3 inches of soil initially, gradually filling the trench as the plants grow. Keep the bed weed-free and water regularly during establishment. Avoid harvesting the first year after planting to allow strong root development. Light harvesting may begin the second year, with full harvests typically beginning in the third season.
